Bertie Ahern as President?

An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has been confirmed as a possible candidate for the upcoming position of EU President, following a visit from the President of the European Parliament yesterday.

Hans-Gert Pottering was speaking at Dáil Eireann ahead of the upcoming Lisbon Treaty Referendum on June 12th.

President Pottering was confident of Mr. Ahern’s ability in this position.

He said: “there are several candidates who could do the job and Mr Ahern would have the necessary experience to be one of those candidates.”

The formation of the position of EU president is one of a litany of aspects dealt with by the new treaty. Other issues handled in the Reform Treaty include globalisation, climate change, energy security and cross border crime.

Mr. Ahern explained the importance of the Irish people’s voice in the imminent referendum.

He said: The eyes of Europe will be on Ireland as the Irish people have a great responsibility to secure the future well being of the Union.”

Although the treaty will benefit European countries overall, Mr. Ahern remarked that ‘it will raise serious economic and social issues for Ireland.’

He said: “we must ensure that in reducing greenhouse gas emissions we do so in a way that is sufficiently flexible and as efficient as possible.”

President Pottering, however, is confident that the Irish people will accept this treaty in June.

How did I do it?:

To begin with, I thought of what was popular in the news at the moment. I settled on the resignation of An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern. Naturally, I looked for articles in the newspaper that supported this.I found articles to this effect in independent.ie. In addition to this, I found a press release on the Taoiseach’s official website, outlining that a new political position may be on the cards for Mr. Ahern, if the Irish people accept the Lisbon Treaty in June.

I read both of these publications and produced an article from the combination of both of these.
