Studying for a degree in journalism requires a thirst for current affairs, a thirst that must be quenched on a daily basis. With a sometimes busy academic and social schedule, it can be difficult to tune into the news on a daily basis, or even read a newspaper cover to cover. In the modern age, however, online journalism has made current affairs extremely accessible.
Up until now, I have found http://news.bbc.co.uk/ an excellent, well rounded site to tap into the day’s current affairs… until I discovered http://www.guardian.co.uk/ that is.
There are several notable similarities between these two sites, including continuous news updating to allow users to follow stories as they unfold, as well as vast amounts of user interactivity by means of news feeds and podcasts.
Although somewhat similar, there are a few distinctive differences that leave the guardian website a cut above the rest.
-
Guardian Unlimited is far more categorised. This allows users to access their areas of interest far easier.
-
The website also contains an array of personal touches, including employment and dating facilities, which I can only assume a great deal of people avail of.
-
On a final note, the guardian website allows its readers to be far more opinionated than the BBC news website, by containing blogs on their page. This way, readers can spark discussions about current affairs, while simultaneously expressing their own personal views.
It is these little details, along with their devotion of news as a whole, that have converted me to an avid guardian reader from this moment on.
